23. Safe Sharing Spaces

Learning Outcomes

-       Appreciate vulnerabilities of oversharing and judgement
-       Lead design of trust fostering sharing spaces

Consciousness of Vulnerabilities

While mutual support and catharsis needs to support free expression, unconstrained oversharing can also risk unwanted effects through hurried advice or without contextual clarity which can misdiagnose root causes. Foster carers can tackle transitional uncertainties and catalyse developing maturity while encouraging self-efficacy with focused and considered responses to honour the true support needs of children.

Fostering Trusted Spaces

Sharing intentions clearly in establishing agreements lays out participatory expectations of children, for example in establishing ground rules, where foster carers can moderate by holding resilient and safe spaces through patient conversations. Anchoring exchanges in solution-seeking instils self-agency, and builds psychological safety for children stemming from non-judgment and compassion.
